There are a few story and open world achievements that give you ascended weapons (notably the Knight of the Thorn side story), and you can farm Unbound/Volatile Magic to buy ascended trinkets. I was looking for this comment- if you have full WvW infusions and an ascended breather, the value of that breather is that you can pop in a swim speed infusion and troll the shit out of people by kiting them hard underwater at bay or around South Island lake area by being so much faster.
